Secure data transmission and the protection of privacy are fundamental factors for a safe Internet. We at aspectra are also committed to these values and practice them, thorough our services, on a daily basis. A donation to Let's Encrypt was therefore only natural.
In order for data to be transmitted securely over the internet, an encryption protocol, a TLS (Transport Layer Security, formerly known as SSL) is indispensable. Internet domains use a TLS certificate to identify the destination server in an encrypted connection, to transmit data securely and to protect its integrity.
A real alternative to conventional certification authorities is Let's Encrypt. The non-profit service has been provided by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG) since 2015 with the aim to enable anyone who owns a domain name to implement a TLS certificate free of charge and in a user-friendly manner. The Let's Encrypt certificates are therefore available free of charge in every country in the world and have already been issued nearly two billion times.
As a free, automated and open certification authority (CA), Let's Encrypt is committed to making the Internet more secure and protecting privacy. The certificates from Let's Encrypt are technically just as secure as commercial domain validation certificates and can be used in many different scenarios.
At aspectra, we use Let's Encrypt for internal applications such as voice over and chat, as well as for customer services, as long as this serves the customers' interests. We assess on a case-by-case basis whether Let's Encrypt makes a good fit. It is not an option, for example, if extended validation certificates are required, which are checked and issued through a different, globally standardised authentication process.
For a secure and privacy-respecting Web: aspectra supports this in spirit as well as financially, with regular donations to Let's Encrypt.
